Here at the Center, we know that it is essential to honor and remember not only the veterans we have among us today but also the veterans who have passed away and the many service members who have died while fighting for our freedom.
We sponsor numerous activities throughout the year that educate the public, with a special focus on tomorrow’s leaders, about the many sacrifices that have been made for individual liberty by thousands of people in the United States military.
Corporal Jordan L. Spears, 21, of Memphis, Indiana, was lost at sea Oct 1, 2014, in the North Arabian Gulf, while supporting U.S. operations in Iraq and Syria (Operation Inherent Resolve). He was a Crew Chief with Marine Tiltrotor Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
Spears, along with another Marine, went into the water when the aircraft he was aboard appeared to lose power and descended to the surface of the ocean shortly after takeoff. The other Marine was rescued from the water and was reported to be in stable condition on board the Makin Island.
"Cpl. Spears was a cherished member of our MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) family, and he fulfilled a key role in our aviation combat element,” said Col. Matthew Trollinger, commanding officer of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, in a Marine Corps news release. “His absence will be felt throughout the unit. My heart goes out to his family, and they will remain in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
He was 13 days shy of his fourth anniversary in the Marines.
